DFELL Position Announcements
Faculty Position in Experimental FEL Physics
The Department of Physics at Duke University invites applications and nominations for a faculty position in the field of experimental free- electron laser physics to begin in the fall of 2006. The appointment will be to a non-tenure-track research professorship, although a tenured or tenure-track position will be considered for a suitable candidate. The search is open to all ranks. A non-tenure track research professorship would have limited teaching and departmental service responsibilities, while a tenured or tenure-track professorship will require a balance of research, teaching, and service responsibilities. We are seeking candidates who have a strong interest in joining a team that is developing novel experimental capabilities enabled by modern light sources. The Duke Free-Electron Laser Laboratory (DFELL) has two FEL light sources capable of producing intense radiation from the infrared to the ultraviolet. An ongoing FEL upgrade will further extend our ultraviolet operation to shorter VUV wavelengths with either linear or circular polarizations. In addition, the DFELL operates and is upgrading a high intensity gamma-ray source powered by the FEL via Compton scattering. We are exploring the development of an intense femtosecond hard x-ray laser as a future light source. Ongoing applications research at DFELL includes the biomedical, biological, and physical sciences and the successful candidate is expected to provide substantial support for the users program. More information can be found at http://www.FEL.Duke.edu and http://www.Phy.Duke.edu . Candidates applying at the rank of assistant professor should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to the search committee, while candidates applying at a higher rank should provide a list of at least three potential letter writers. Send vitae and reference material to Edwards@FEL.Duke.edu or to: FEL Search Committee, attn: Denise Gamble, Department of Physics, Duke University FEL Laboratory, Box 90319 , LaSalle Street Ext., Durham , NC 27708-0319 . Applications received by December 31st will be guaranteed consideration.
