A Photo Injector Test Facility is under construction at DESY Zeuthen (PITZ) within a cooperation of BESSY, DESY, MBI, and TUD. The aim is to develop and operate an optimized photo injector for future free electron lasers and linear accelerators. First operation of the rf gun is planned for autumn 2000. A first stage of the photocathode laser system with gaussian pulses of 6 ps duration (sigma) will be installed end of 2000. A continual upgrade of the laser system up to a flat top temporal profile with leading and falling edges of about 1 ps
is foreseen.
In the beginning, the operation of the test facility will be dominated by detailed measurements of the electron beam parameters and comparisons with simulations. The goal is to develop an optimized rf gun for the subsequent use at the TTF-FEL. Further on, the concept of producing flat electron beams for use in the TESLA linear collider will be studied.
An outline of the scientific goals, the planned and existing hardware and the status of the project will be presented.
