There are few high gain free electron lasers for comparison to the proposed x-ray LCLS FEL. While the early LLNL ELF experiments 15 years ago operated at microwave wavelengths, it has many characteristics similar to the x-ray LCLS. High gain experiments now underway in the infrared are intermediate between microwave and x-ray wavelengths, but the extrapolation from infrared to x-rays is the same extrapolation from microwaves to the infrared.
