A new approach to produce coherent hard x-ray by cascading several stages of High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) is studied. Compared with Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) scheme, this scheme could produce fully longitudinally coherent radiation. Furthermore, the radiation produced by HGHG scheme has a narrower bandwidth, more stable central wavelength, controllable pulse length, and better stability. For the purpose of comparison, the parameters of the electron bunches are the now available ones from DESY TTF and SLAC LCLS project.
